“A Yellowstone in the Carpathians – Biodiversity, Large Carnivores and Local Communities”

To protect Europe’s natural heritage, Barbara Promberger-Füerpass and Christoph Promberger have established the Foundation Conservation Carpathia (FCC). Among the FCC’s goals: buying up forests, creating acceptance for large carnivores, reintroducing bison and developing projects for the sustainable development of the region together with the local population.

Contents Seminar part:

• System of free-range sheep and cows in the Romanian Carpathians.
• Breeding program of Carpathian livestock guardian dogs
• Concept of Fundatia Conservation Carpathia (FCC) on wildlife management and involvement
  of local population:
  • Prevention of large carnivore conflicts through livestock guardian dogs and electric
    fences, on-site intervention in case of acute conflicts, and compensation offers by
    FCC in case of livestock kills (replacement of equivalent cows or sheep).
  • Reintroduction of bison and beaver in the project area
  • Monitoring of bears, wolves, lynx and red deer

Contents Excursions:

• Ecotourism under the theme of large wildlife: bear watching in observation huts of the
  foundation, bison watching, guided wildlife monitoring tours.
• Cobor Biodiversity Farm with old domestic animal breeds, ancient oak wood pastures (about 500
  years old), innovative farm concept
• Primeval forest in Strambisoara.
• Project areas:
  • e. g. Forest protection and renaturation of former clear-cut areas; Wildlife monitoring; Conflicts of bears and wild boars with the local population; Reintroduction of Beavers & Bisons; Oak wood pastures in Nucsoara; Primeval forests and wind throw areas
